Designs, Period.
Introduction

by Carol Hanson/Caryl de Trecesson

The charted designs in this booklet are of two types. The first type is my own interpretation of a calligraphic alphabet or drawn design. The second type is a pattern charted from the photograph of an actual embroidery piece. (My thanks to Bausch & Lomb and the publishers of the Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary for providing an excellent magnifying glass.) I have not included any designs from period pattern books since there are already a number of excellent sources for those (please see the Bibliography: Resources section if you are unaware of them).

The earlier editions of this work were copied from charts hand-drawn on graph paper. I trust you will find the new charts easier to work with, and I have included more notes on the individual designs and the embroidery pieces used. There are even more designs now, and the appendices and index are also new to this edition. I wish to thank Kim Brody for providing such a high professional standard to emulate, and Caleb Hanson for the generous time and effort he donated to in-house (literally) text editing. Thanks must also go to my wonderful children, David and Bethany, for allowing me occasional use of the computer.

Needlework pieces are made with time and care and are rarely deliberately destroyed. Please date and initial (or sign) your work for the benefit of future researchers as well as for your own descendants.
